After suffering a defeat at the hands of Sebastian Korda in the Gijon Open, Andy Murray’s chances of winning a tour championship in 2022 have been dashed. Murray had advanced to the round of eight in Northern Spain thanks to victories over the sixth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Pedro Cachin. However, despite the fact that he battled back from a set down to level matters, it was the American Korda who prevailed by winning the decider 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
After watching the long match between Arthur Rinderknech and Pablo Carreno, in which Rinderknech prevailed 18-16 in a final set tie-break, the two players were forced to sit and wait for quite some time before they could take the court. And after just two games, Murray and Korda gave every indication that they were in for a long night of their own as the latter squandered a series of break opportunities before ultimately capitalizing on an opportunity to take the lead 2-1.
The world’s number 49 player, whose family is well-known in the athletic world, then scored a double break, and with a score of 5-2, it seemed as if he would easily win the first set. However, the Scot was able to make a comeback, regaining one break and then fending off a set point to bring the score back to 5-4 and force his opponent to serve out the match.
However, he did so as expected, and Murray responded by raising the stakes at the beginning of the second. After winning his first service game to love, he missed his first opportunity at break point before a mistake by Korda provided his second opportunity at break point, which he capitalized on to become the former world number one.
